Dad
Happy birthday Jonathan. I know that it is technically not your birthday, since it's past midnight, but we just came back from New York, where we had dinner with Josh and your friends. I guess you know that we get together with them for your birthday. Chip and Marisa were there - Chip came from Nashville. Emily and her friend Lefty were there. And Josh's friend Katie came. We went to Kate's, and Chip noticed that the first song that we heard was by The Velvet Underground, a group you like that I had heard there before. Before we left for New York, I wrote a letter to Dr. Uckun, in Minnesota, to thank him for his kindness to you when we visited him three years ago. I had meant to write him for a long time, and today seemed like the right time. Mom baked a cake for your birthday and we're going to have some in a few minutes. I think about you every day and I love you.

i happened upon this place by chance (forgive the intrusion...) i only met him by chance a few times in college, but the memories are distinct. it's really great that i can now wish him the best in the beyond, because you never forget the truly, truly beautiful...

Dad
Three years ago, on February 13, 2002, you learned of your relapse after your bone marrow transplant. Over the telephone, Dr. Papadopoulus told you that your last bone marrow test showed 80% blasts and you were going to die. We will never forget that day, and what a great fighter you were and how no matter how painful or how hard it was, you continued to fight so long as you had a chance. To me you will always be here and I still love you and always will.

Taube
On a recent rainy day in Jerusalem we were riding in the car and the radio was playing songs that were appropriate for the weather. The song "An Umbrella for Two" came on that made us think of Jonathan. When Jonathan was sick we once sent him a tape of Hebrew songs and this was the one that he liked- he picked it according to the melody and beat. The kids and I sat and translated it for him and now whenever we hear this song it reminds us of Jonathan.

Just wanted to tell you that I was thinking of you. Perhaps it has not been on paper, in actual words, on email, but it's in my heart.

Dad
Today is your second yahrzeit, two years on the Jewish calender. As it always will, it falls one day before the Jewish fast day, the seventeenth of Tammuz. It feels right to me that this day ushers in a period of three weeks of mourning. This year however, your yahrzeit coincides, on the secular calender, with the fiftieth anniversary of the birth of rock'n roll. Fifty years ago Elvis recorded "That's Allright." I know you'd give me an agrument about that song marking the birth of rock'n roll and you probably have the whole real history on the tip of your tongue. And I'm thinking about hearing you tell it to me.
