I love you, Dad
Hi Jonathan: "The Development of Early Hebrew Writing" was the subject of the talk I gave yesterday to honor you in synagogue. It's your eleventh Yahzeit tonight and I spent a long time preparing the talk because I wanted it to be something that you would have enjoyed. I started however, by speaking about you and about how The Physicals were voted the best band on campus, about your radio program and about NME. What made the biggest impact on my friends was when I told them about your schemes to try to meet Natalie Portman while you were at Tufts and she was at Harvard. You had some great ideas, but the goal you set was a tough one and unfortunately you never succeeded. Still, your plans showed a great deal about you, your ingenuity, your ambition, and your character. Today as much as much as always I'm proud of you and

We miss you and love you, Dad
Hi Jonathan: Tonight begins the day of your tenth Yahrzeit. It is really hard to believe that ten years have passed. I still feel as if we were in Sloan only a short time ago. Last night Mom and I came home from Montecatini, in Italy. We were there for Josh and Lara's wedding. It's too bad that you never had a chance to meet Lara. She would have been a great sister. You would have enjoyed the wedding - lots of good Italian food and a great Gypsy band that played Jewish music in their own unique style. I wonder if you would have convinced the band to let you play with them. In any event, I'm sure you would have enjoyed their music. The night before the wedding, the guests went to a restaurant at the top of a mountain and ate pizza and pasta and listened to a sound track that Josh put together from your radio programs. It was almost like having you actually be there with us. You were there with us and we all love you as much now as ever. Mom and I just received a beautiful note from Irina. She noted that it has now been 10 years and she wrote us to tell that she always remembers you and that you left an "unbelievably big mark on her life." Irina's note meant a great deal to us, as I am sure it does to you.

Love as always, Dad
Your unfulfilled destiny is what I often think about and coincidentally, "Unfulfilled Destinies" is the title of a paper written this year by Alexandra Kleinerman of Cornell University and Alhena Gadotti of Townson University and dedicated to your memory. Kleinerman and Gadotti wrote about a cuneiform school tablet with a previously unknown Sumerian proverb that states that no matter what natural abilities we are given by the gods (in this proverb, Enki the Sumerian god "whose decisions establish destinies for all of humanity"), the human condition is to squander the gods' gifts to us. Today you would have been 32 years old, a young adult who knew his abilities, and understood what life has to offer. Everyone who knew you, knows that contrary to prediction in the proverb cited by the paper's authors, you would have had the ambition and energy to fulfill your destiny. Today, as always, I think of you and wonder about what wonderful accomplishments you would have achieved by now.

Love, Dad
Yesterday was your ninth yahrzeit and although we always think of you and talk about you, it is also nice to have friends and associates mark your memory. This past year was marked by a beautiful dedication to you. In his book, The Lexical Texts in the Schoyen collection, Miguel Civil, Professor of Sumerology at the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago, included a dedication to you. The chapter on a lexical tablet written by Sin-suma-iddina, the young scribe, son of the royal scribe, was “Published in memory of Jonathan (aka Johnny Physical) Neuman z”l (February 19, 1980 to June 26, 2002), beloved son of Lewis and Janet Neuman.”

Love, Dad
Today is the ninth anniversary of your death on the solar calendar, just a day after the second anniversary of Michael Jackson's death. Although for your family there will never be a story as sad as yours, Michael's story and yours have a great deal in common and it seems difficult for us to avoid the comparison. Both of you were rock/pop singers, with your lives devoted to music. Both of you passed away while under medical care, him for his emotional problems and addiction, you for leukemia. Both of your deaths are related to medical errors and physicians' callousness, although your medical treatment was far worse. The end was unfortunately the same. Although Michael Jackson lived longer and achieved far greater fame, you will always remain the greatest rock singer in our hearts.
